Stock Your Koi Fish Pond
Once you have your koi pond built and you have filled it with water and had the filtration system working to get your water in the right condition. Once you have let the water settle and tested it, then it will be time to stock your pond.
Koi are wonderful fish and full of color, they can be expensive if you are buying a blood line pedigree Koi, but there is no need to as there are so many of these fish produced today that the prices are not so expensive if you are not chasing a bloodline. The main thing to remember is to really go to a Koi specialist as they concentrate on the breeding of these fish, so you are more likely to be buying good quality healthy fish.
There are many different color make up of Koi to what there used to be and they all have names, it’s a long list. The best way is to visit your nearest specialist and decide purely from a visual point of view which ones suit your taste. How many fish really depends on how big your pond is, a general rule is about one to two feet of surface area of water per inch of fish.
Take care when you introduce your new fish to your pond. Make sure you float their holding bag into the pond water for around thirty minutes to equalize the temperature and then add a little pond water to the bag to equalize the water ph between the holding water and the pond water, only then can you think about letting the fish into their new home.
Monitor your pond for a few days to make sure your fish are settling OK and that there are no obvious problems with any of the fish, you may not see much of them at the pond surface for a few days as they get used to their new surroundings, but all being well it won’t be long before they are surfacing for food.
