Koi Pond Construction

Once you have decided what size your Koi pond is going to be and where you are going to locate it in your garden it is time to get to work. This is something that should not be rushed, take your time making sure that as you construct your pond it remains level.

Water will always be level and if your finished pond is higher one end than the other it will really show and you won’t be pleased. The main design of a Koi pond is normally a rectangle. You can either dig out your pond full depth into the ground which will make it flush with the surface or you can part dig and part build a wall to raise the pond out of the ground.

There are many different methods to how different people will construct a pond. The basic method for a Koi pond is to have it partly raised. This means you will have to dig down a certain amount. I will give you a basic run through of a pond construction.

A Koi pond is normally deeper at one end to the other, so as we are going to build a wall for the raised part of the pond, the shallow end only needs to be dug out enough to accommodate the base and the deeper end obviously needs to go down to the required depth. This will depend on how high your wall will be.

Once you have your required depth you will need to dig a bit further to allow for the fitting of the bottom drain and its pipe work. This will be covered with concrete so it is essential that you get it all situated in the right place. The concrete will bring the base back up to your required depth.

Methods will change in the actual pond construction, some will build the wall above ground and use a liner, others will build internal walls and then render and either seal them or paint them to stop the toxins of the cement render from contaminating the pond water.

It is important durng construction to get all the necessary pipe work installed as you build. A site for the filtration unit needs to be established before you start and constructed as you proceed.

The size, depth and ancillaries are the most important part of the Koi pond construction, how you go about the actual make up of the pond structure is really down to personal choice as there are many variations to several different methods. The simplest being the pond liner route, but some people go all out for a none destructable structure that would be hard to demolish with a bulldozer.
