Koi Pond
Regarded by many as the ultimate in fish keeping is the Koi Pond. These fish are beautiful and if keeping of them is mastered then you will not regret your decision of going for them in the first place. Some people build a pond and stock it with either goldfish or a variety of fish.
After a period of time they decide that they would like to keep Koi, now most Koi are kept in a dedicated pond that was constructed solely for the use of these great fish. But it is possible to add a few to a pond that is already populated by other fish, this is not ideal. This is why it is important to really think about the type of fish you want to keep before you start any pond construction.
So if you already have a pond with a selection of other fish then you can try adding a Koi, but like I said it is not ideal. Your pond plants may well get eaten and the whole design of a normal pond is not ideal for the Koi. The sloping sides of a regular pond, the deepest part being in the middle of the pond, also the actual depth (may not be deep enough) are not a home for the Koi to flourish. If you want Koi then it is probably best to build another pond just for them or pass your existing fish (if you can part with them) onto another pond owner you know will cherish them and the reconstruct your original pond to suit Koi.
Now the ideal situation is to decide at the beginning which route you really want to go and if it is the Koi pond route then you are in luck as I am going to write a series of posts all about The Koi Pond. These will follow as I write them, so keep your eye out for the first one coming soon.
If you can’t wait for my series then I have a guide here on how to construct your own Koi pond.
