Koi
THE KING OF THE POND
I thought I would start with the big one, the Koi Carp. These fish are beautiful and a favourite fish choice for a lot of ponds. Lets find out a bit about them..
The Koi which means carp in Japanese is a part of the common carp family but in the early nineteen hundreds they were domesticated and bred for colour in Japan and now are a very colourful breed of fish. The keeping of Koi is worldwide and there are many specialist breeders in every country.
There are some people that say Koi are difficult fish to keep, but I think that as long as your pond is of adequate size and you have got a good filtration system then as long as you feed them right and keep the water healthy then there is no reason why keeping Koi should be any more difficult than other fish. Koi are quite resilient fish that can be kept in a lot of different climates.
Koi can be purchased from pet stores, but for a better variety then it is better to visit a Koi specialist there are plenty around. But if you are stuck then you can purchase these fish online and they will be delivered to your door. Koi are expensive fish and it can end up a very expensive to stock a large pond with Koi. So only consider these fish if you have got plenty of dollars to spare.
There are now many varieties of koi and there are to many to list here but they are all very colourful.
So if you have set your heart on stocking your pond with Koi then you have made a good choice but remember they are expensive to buy and it is worth getting them from a place that has a good reputation.
I have included a short video below from Videojug that will give you a brief insight into keeping Koi fish so take a look here.
