Parrot Feather
Do you really need a parrot for your pond ? No you don’t unless you want one of course, but there is a plant that is called parrot’s feather that you may want to consider for your pond among many others. So what kind of plant is parrot’s feather.. This plant is an oxygenator and will release oxygen into the pond water, something that your fish need to survive, they are submerged in the water and have small thin leaves that look feathery, hence their name. They only produce oxygen throughout day light hours, which is something to think about, so they should not be the only form of oxygen supply to your pond. The good thing is that of a night they do compete with algae for nutrients.
These are obviously not the only oxygenating plants that you can have in your pond there are others such as the common known Curly Pond Weed which some people are put off by because it is said to grow very rapidly or Cabomba which is also feathery to look at, there are many more and it is a good idea to have a few varieties. Most are sold in bunches and although some can be left floating, I have always potted them in small pots and submerged them into the pond. These plants also provide shelter for the fish.
We know that it is important for our fish to have oxygen, they won’t do to well without it, so it is important to include some known oxygenator plants into your pond garden.
Plants are an important part of any garden pond so they should always be included and I will be looking at some other types of aquatic plants that could be considered as part of your ponds plant life in some future posts. So remember your oxygenators.
