Pond Construction

WHAT TYPE OF POND

So what type of pond do we think we are going to construct. Will it be a water garden or fish pond. They are different and need different requirements when building.

So if we are going for a straight forward water garden without fish then if you have installed your pond and some plants then you are pretty much done. If you want to keep the water clear then you may think about installing a filter in your building process. If you don’t mind murky water then there is no need. Of course you can add a fountain or waterfall.

So if its a fish pond you are building then from the start you need to incorporate a filter and a pump to circulate the water and filter it, this also helps prevent the build up of algae. A fountain or waterfall is also a consideration before you build, these are good for aeration of the water to provide oxygen to the fish.

If you are going to keep gold fish then your pond can be any size. If you are thinking of keeping Koi then you need to be looking at a larger pond that is fairly deep. In fact the larger and deeper the better for Koi. It is possible to have a mixed pond but it wouldn’t be wise if your pond is going to be modest in size.

So once you have decided the type of pond you want, its time to design it and pick whether you are going for a preformed or flexible liner type. Then you can dig your pond fit the preform or liner. You can then deal with the filter and pnmp and make sure they are sited and ready to go. Choose your plants and fill your pond. Planting is a bit of a choice for you. Some people get their plants in position before they fill the pond, others part fill it and others plant once it is full. If you decide on the last option then remember you will get wet.

If you are going for a standard fish pond look at this if you are going for a Koi pond then look at this

In my next posts I will be looking at pumps and filters, plants and fish.
