Pond Design

Garden pond near Niagara Falls.

GET IT RIGHT FROM THE START

This is an important part of your pond, the design. Get the design and planning of your pond right and you will not encounter to many problems.

So where do I start when planning a pond. Once you have thought carefully about the safety aspects of adding a pond to your garden and you have this part covered. Then you can start to plan everything about your pond. It is worth spending some time on this part of your pond project, that way you should minimize any mistakes.

Location of your pond. This could be the easiest or the hardest decision depending on the type of garden you have. Try to place your pond so it can be enjoyed from where you normally sit in the garden or where you can see it from inside your home. Do not put your pond under trees as things that fall from the trees could be harmful to your pond and some species of tree can harm the fish as well. The ground will need to be level otherwise you will have to build the ground up so as to make it level.

Your pond will need to receive several hours of sunlight a day for plants to grow but to much sunshine will promote algae so take this into consideration before you start to dig. If you decide you are going to have a waterfall running into your pond or any other water feature then make sure you can see this from your normal seating area or you will be disappointed after all your effort.

Be sure to not to place a pond where electric, water pipes or drainage pipes run underground. If you have taken every step to avoid this then still be careful when you do come to dig. The other side to this is that you are going to need access to water to not be to far away from your pond, also an electrical source for any lighting or a fountain etc… You may have to lay underground cables to your pond so always consult a qualified electrician.

So when you have decided the perfect location for your pond you may want to consider what is coming up in the next posts.
