Pond Filter
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
What type of pond filter do we need for our pond and should it be a certain size. In this post I will try to go through the best filter for your pond.
The main types of filters that you can get.
Pressure filters: These are a sealed pump unit that is submersed in the pond and then pumps the water from the pond into the sealed filter unit. Once the water has passed through the filter it leaves under pressure through another pipe back into the pond.
Gravity filter: These filters are again fed from a pump in the pond. The water is pumped through the filter but is not pressurized so relies on gravity to make its way back to the pond. What this means is that the filter housing unit needs to be higher than the pond. So the ideal position would be at the top of a waterfall.
Either type of filter is responsible for keeping the water clean and filtering out toxins from fish waste and all other small debris with in the pond water. Make sure you choose a pond filter that is the right size for your volume of water, if it to small your pond water may look clean but that doesn’t mean that the water is healthy water. There are kits available for testing the water, more about them later.
The size of the filter you need will depend on the volume of water in your pond. There seems to be different methods of calculating the volume of a pond. I use this method.. length x width x depth x 7.5 = volume in gallons. Most filters will tell you there volume capabilities. So if you have 2000 gallon pond then you will purchase a filter unit capable of filtering that volume adequately. It is said that if you have a pond that is in a lot of direct sunlight then add 25% volume to your ponds total volume this is to deal with the extra algae growth that will acure.
Always buy a good quality filter, it will work out more economical in the long run.
