POND DE-ICER

Lets keep those fishes warm in the cold of the winter. May be not but we can keep them alive.

In the winter if our pond freezes over then we need to make sure that we make a hole in the ice. If we don’t then the harmful gases that normally escape from the pond will not be able to and the result will be harmful to our fish. These gases will poison them and they will die. Now we don’t want that, so we have to make sure that we provide a hole in the ice to keep our fish safe.

This can easily be done by placing a saucepan or similar container filled with hot water on the ice to melt a hole in it, don’t just place this on the ice and go and forget about it as it will probably fall into your pond which could cause all sorts of problems, you have to supervise that saucepan. Never smash a hole in the ice as this could shock the fish and that could kill them, which defeats the object of putting a hole in the ice in the first place.

The other thing you could do is look at getting a pond de-icer for the winter months. You can get submersible or floating pond de-icers. They stop a small area of the pond from freezing over to allow out those harmful gases. The good thing about these little de-icing units is that they will only come on when the water goes below a certain temperature and then switch off again when it goes back above that temperature. That will help keep the electricity consumption down. These also get called pond heaters and really are the same as pond de-icers and do the same thing.

A true pond heater is for actually keeping the temperature of the water at a certain degree which goldfish or koi don’t need, these are for tropical or exotic types of fish that need warmer water.

So a pond de-icer is a good bit of kit for our ponds in the winter months and will keep our fish safe during this period.
