Pond Liners
FLEXIBLE POND LINERS
The flexible pond liner comes in various different materials such a PVC, EPDM, Polyethylene and Butyl Rubber. Pvc is probably the cheapest and Butyl probably the most expensive.
The life expectancy of Pvc is not as long a Butyl which is why they are at different ends of the pond budget. So when thinking about what material to buy bear in mind that a pond is not something you normally decide to install just for a few years. The other material you should be using when installing a pond liner is a pond underlay made of a geotextile material that not only protects the liner from sharp objects and stones but helps to stabilize the liner and helps prevent it stretching.
The advantage with flexible pond liners is that you can design your own shape and different depths and plant shelves and the liner will mould into your design. The liner you purchase needs to be bigger than the size of your pond to allow for the depth and overhang. Most good pond liner supplies will calculate the size of the liner needed from the measurements of your pond.
Mark out your pond shape using some rope and then place some stakes and line to work to. As you dig out your pond, (remember to be careful of underground cables and pipes) down to you first level, you can now use the stakes and line to mark around the first level and then dig inside that to your next level. The first level will form your planting shelf.
When you have got your pond all dug out and you are happy with the different levels, make sure that you remove any stones or other sharp objects before you then put down the underlay and then lay your pond liner over your pond making sure you have it evenly overlapped around each edge. fit your liner as close to your pond shape as possible and then slowly fill with water, you can ease out creases or folds as it is filling so the liner settles nicely into your pond shape.
Once your pond is fall you can turn your attention to bedding in the liner around the edge of your pond. Most people use slabs, which should be slightly overhung to protect the edge of the liner. But it is your choice to decide how you will finish the edge of your pond.
Then you are best to add a water conditioner to neutralize the chlorine or any other toxins that may be found in tap water. Next let the water settle.
