Pond Pumps

WHAT TYPE

When it comes to pond pumps it is the same scenario as the pond filter. What type of pump should I get for my pond and waht size pump will I need. Lets take a look..

There are two types of pump a submersible pump and an external pump. Put plain and simple the submersible pump is more suited to a small pond and an external pump more suited to a large pond maybe like a koi pond. There is no real hard rule to that except that if you use an external pump which are quite powerful then it would curculate the water at to higher rate than needed.

To work out the size of the pond pump you need is going back to the capacity of water in your pond. Once you know how much water is in your pond then the pump specifications will tell you how much water the pump can turn around per hour. A ponds water should be turned around roughly every two hours, so this would mean that you need a pump with a flow half the size of the amount of the water in your pond. So as a simple example if you have a 2000 litre pond then you would need a pond pump with a flow rate of around 1000 litres per hour.

If you are going to have a fountain or other water feature is it best to have one pump serving both filter and feature or two separate ones. Well if you decide to go for one pump then you need to make sure it can handle both applications, also with one pump it means that your fountain or water feature will be running 24/7.

If you go for two seperate pumps then you can turn the fountain or feature off when ever you want, especially of a night when it may sound as if it is quite noisy.

There are many pond pumps on the market but as with a filter it is better to buy quality as these pump motors are expected to do a lot of work in their lifetime, so reliability is what you are going to need.
