Pond Safety
SAFETY FIRST
If you have decided to construct a pond in your garden then the first thing to consider before you start is safety. You need to consider what risks a pond will pose to your family or friends.
If you have children then this is a very important factor, especially very young children. Don’t just think about your own children, because if you have got children then they have probably got friends and these friends may well play with your children in your garden at some point.
So the biggest thing to consider is the risk of drowning. The water does not have to be deep for a person to drown in it. It would be ideal to have a good strong mesh over the pond or a decent fence around the pond. Make sure that the edges of the pond are stable so that they won’t give way under foot. There are plenty of products on the market to help prevent people falling into a pond, so before you even start to construct your pond check these out.
Another thing to consider in terms of safety when you have a pond is any electrics that may serve pumps or filters and fountains or lights. As we all know the combination of electricity and water is not a good one. So all cable lengths should be properly connected and secured. Most electrical equipment for ponds supplied by good sources will be safe, but will only remain safe if they are properly installed. Electricity is dangerous Do Not attempt to cut any corners when dealing with electrics. Always get a qualified electrician to install any electrical equipment for you.
You need to know you have got these points covered and in order before you actually start building your pond. Remember pond safety is important and it should be thought about during the planning stages of your pond. It is better to have a safe pond that you can enjoy for many years to come, rather than your pond become a site of tragedy.
