Pond Thermometer
Does the average pond need a thermometer, do we really need to keep an eye on our ponds water temperature. A pond thermometer is considered as a required piece of kit, when keeping fish.
If you have a selection of gold fish in your pond and the climate where you are is not subject to extremes then there may be less of a need for a pond thermometer. If your climate is prone to high temperatures in the summer and freezing in the winter then you will need a pond thermometer.
I think the golden rule is to just get one and then you will be able to make sure that all is rosy in your pond as far as temperature goes. The ideal temperature range is between 20°C – 25°C with a little leeway each side.
Where your pond is situated will have a bearing on how dramatically the temperature changes, for example on a hot sunny day if your pond is partly in the shade then its temperature will not go up as dramatically as if it were exposed to direct sunlight.
Temperature has a bearing on when you should feed your fish, if the temperature is either to cold or to hot then you should not feed your fish. Anything below 10°C then don’t feed them, anything above 30°C then don’t feed them, anything in between and you can feed them.
So I would say that it is worth having a pond thermometer and you can get pretty cheap floating thermometers that are accurate, but if like me you like your gadgets, then there are more expensive ones. You can get a thermometer that has a probe you put into the water that sends the temperature reading to a digital display unit in your house. These also have temperature settings that have an alarm if the water drops or rises above the set temperatures. Pretty cool stuff !
