Pond Vacuum
POND ACCESSORIES
One of the major things that people like to do when they have a pond is keep their water as clear as possible, this way you get to see the fish more. So how do we keep our ponds clean.
The pond vacuum is a great way to clean out the sludge from the bottom of your pond. There are plenty of pond vacuums on the market. The simplest and cheapest version works off of a garden hose which creates a vacuum. You do need to have a good amount of water pressure from your hose for these systems to work properly. I have never used one of these but I have a friend that had one a few years back and he had pretty good results with it, I think if you don’t let the sludge build up to much then these type are OK.
For a bigger pond or one that has more build up of sludge it may be worth considering a pond vacuum unit that is more powerful than the hose type. These are great for vacing your pond and don’t rely on hose pressure to work at their best. There is one thing with most of these vacs that annoys most people that have them and that is that you have to keep stopping to empty them as they fill up so quickly.
There are other types of this vacuum that will discharge as you go which means you don’t have to keep stopping to empty them. I have one of these and it is called an Oase pondovac 3. This is a great vacuum and works with two chambers that fill and empty alternately so if one chamber gets full the other takes over whilst the full one empties and so on. The other good thing about these vacs are that you can let the sludge collected discharge onto your garden as fertilizer. These are a bit pricey but are well worth the money once you have got them. Here is the pond vacuum I use.
