Preformed Garden Ponds
ARE THEY BETTER THAN POND LINERS
This is more down to personal choice really. Although a preformed pond could workout cheaper than a pond liner. They are also some what easier to install than a pond liner that needs a lot more planning.
Preformed ponds come in many shapes and sizes, so I guess the first thing to decide is just that. Do you want you pond to be symmetrical or asymmetrical the former being easier to mark out as you can turn this upside down to mark it out. The asymmetrical would have to be supported in position and then marked out with stakes before joining those stakes up to get your shape. As for the size of your pond, one thing to remember is that a preformed pond will always look smaller once it is in the ground to what it did before it went in the ground.
When digging out the ground to receive your preformed pond (remember to be careful of cables and pipes) you need to make the hole a few inches larger (or centimetres) than the pond mould in depth as well as length and width. Remove any sharp objects from the earth that the pond is going to rest on and try to get the different depths and shelves as close to your mould shape as possible to support all parts of it.
Once you have got to the point where your hole is a fairly good match to your mould then pack your hole surfaces with around 5cm of sand or a suitable underlay. The next thing to do is put your mould in the hole and get it level. It is important to get your pond mould level, if you don’t once you fill it with water it will really show if it is not level.
Now that you have got your pond in place and level, start to fill it with water very slowly and as you do so constantly checked around the whole of the pond edges for gaps between the pond and the ground. Any gaps should be back filled with sand. Then you should turn your attention to finishing the edges of the pond.
Once you get to this point it would be a good idea to add a water conditioner to clear the water of any toxins.
Hey presto you should have your pond installed. In my next post I will take a quick look at pond Liners. Coming up soon, what to do once you have installed and filled your pond with water.
