Water Treatment

HEALTHY WATER FOR HEALTHY FISH

If you want healthy fish then you need to make sure that your pond water is neutralized of any toxins before you introduce your fish into their new environment.

Although I have mentioned water treatment in a couple of my previous posts, I thought I would just go over what is needed for your pond water before the fish go into it.

So once you have got your pond filled with water, which would have been from a tap in your yard or house. The next thing to do is rid the water of any toxins. Tap water contains a few substances, chlorine being one of them. To do this buy a good water treatment product and add it to the water as per the instructions.

Once you have got your filter and pump ready to go there is a product that you can add to the filter box to help it start the bacteria growth. These bacterias will help to consume the ammonia and nitrite in the water and also other waste products. Be sure to follow the  instructions on the product.

Now for your plants. Well you want healthy plants as well as healthy fish. So when you purchase your plants then get a pond plant food product for your plants. These products feed the plants healthy nutrients with out affecting the pond itself.

There are many products on the market for the treatment of pond water and to get you started I have set up a link here to a page with a variety of water treatment products that you can take your time to look through and read what each one can do for your pond, do come back after though as there is more to do.

You can now test your pond water with a water testing kit. What these kits do is test your water for ammonia and nitrite levels, also the pH level of the water. Again read the instructions carefully so you know you are doing everything right. Here are a couple of kits for you to take a look at, as with the water treatment products there are many to choose from, theses are just 2 that I know are good quality products. They both have a short description to give you an idea fo how they work.

It is best to carry out these tests on your pond water at regular intervals, that way you will keep your water healthy which will be the best environment for healthy fish and plants. I hope this post will help you when it comes to getting your pond water ready for your fish,   So What Next ?

I guess we better start to talk about the fish. My next few posts will be about some of the different fish that we can keep in our ponds.
